Neck and Shoulder Pain by Seilesh

Neck and Shoulder Pain

Our neck and shoulders are prone to developing pain due to the delicate alignment of the bones and muscles in these areas. The spine that makes up neck is made of delicately aligned vertebrae, while the shoulder is made of four bones. All the muscles and tendons of this area form a complex network running in many directions, making it possible for the shoulder and neck to move in many different directions. This allows us to twist, turn and rotate our arms, head and upper back in many different directions. But strain on them can affect the alignment of these bones and muscles, leading to neck and shoulder pain.

Poor posture is also a big culprit when it comes to neck and shoulder pain. The ligaments and muscles may be strained too much, leading to neck and shoulder pain. Slouching, slumping, working in an awkward position - all lead to neck and shoulder pain

Neck Pain

The spine is made up of bones called vertebrae stacked on each other. Accidents and injuries can cause damage to the neck by stretching the neck too much, in an unnatural position, resulting in neck pain. Sometimes, neck pain is also caused by whiplash injuries often suffered in car collisions, when the neck “whips” backward or forward and the rest of the body is carried in the opposite direction due to momentum. Neck pain treatment includes pain killers, icepacks, anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery. The root cause of the neck pain, however, must be addressed before it can be successfully treated. Chiropractic seeks to treat neck pain arising out of strain or tear of muscles, ligaments etc. through massage and other therapies.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pains are also caused due to more or less similar reasons. Overexertion, tendonitis, shoulder joint mismatch, pinched nerves and dislocation cause shoulder pain. Chiropractic aims to remove the pressure exerted by the misaligned bone on the “pinched” nerve. Also, chiropractic is highly useful when it comes to treating shoulder dislocations.

Chiropractic and Neck and Shoulder Pain

In almost all cases of neck and shoulder pain, chiropractic techniques can be useful. Your chiropractic therapist will look into factors like your lifestyle, diet, and past problems before deciding on a course of treatment. Apart from realigning the problem vertebra, or other adjustments to relieve the pain and stiffness, the chiropractor may also recommend use of special pillows, sauna, ice packs and exercises to relieve the neck and shoulder pain.

The chiropractor aims not just to heal the pain symptoms, but also the root causes underlying them. They could be anything from pinched nerves to vertebrae dislocation. Neck and shoulder pains have a tendency to become a chronic problem if not treated early, so it is always a good idea to consult a chiropractor in the early stages. So if you feel throbbing pain, or a tingling pain extending from your shoulder upwards to the head, consult a chiropractor.
