Grapefruit Detox

December 10th, 2007 · No Comments

A few days ago I read about a grapefruit detox in David Wolfe’s book, Eating For Beauty.  I happen to love grapefruit and the results David describe one would enjoy from doing the detox sounded good to me so I decided to give it a try.  Here’s the deal.  For three days all you eat is grapefruit.  You can either eat with a spoon, peel it like an orange and eat in segments or you can juice it.  Anyway you slice it though all you eat is grapefruit, and drink plenty of water of course.

In his book David says that grapefruit contain anti-inflammatory, skin-cleansing, and mucus & cellulite reducing properties.  It’s the enzyme bromelain that gives grapefruit its anti-inflammatory and skin-cleansing ability.  Grapefruits are also the mildest in acid of all the citrus fruits and are mild in sugar content.

This evening I am on day three of the detox.  I’ll admit I am REALLY looking forward to eating more than just grapefruit tomorrow, but I am also very glad I did the detox.  My skin is clear and I feel less congestion.  I didn’t weight myself when I started, but I think I’ve lost some weight because my clothes are loose.  I have been hungry while doing the detox, but not overly so.  Not bad enough that I really needed to eat.  I felt a little light-headed if I went too long without eating or drinking grapefruit juice, but overall I have felt good.

I’m not saying this is the right detox for each person.  Trust your intuition and do what feels best for you.  This detox jumped out on the page and felt like something that would be really good for me.  I find it helpful to give my body a break once a while from the other foods I eat regularly.

If you’ve done the grapefruit detox, I’d be interested to hear about your experience.
