Blueberries: Powerful Antioxidants & More

December 4th, 2007 · No Comments

You may be aware that blueberries are a powerful antioxidant, but did you also know that researchers are finding that blueberries have strong anti-cancer fighting properties and help prevent urinary tract infections?

According to a study conducted by Mary Ann Lila Smith, PhD at the University of Illinois, there is a flavonoid in blueberries that blocks one of the enzymes that promotes cancer.

Researchers at the Rutgers Blueberry Cranberry Research Center in Chatsworth, N.J., have discovered that like cranberries, blueberries contain compounds that stop the bacteria which creates urinary tract infections from attaching to the wall of the bladder.

How can you add some blueberries to your diet?  Here are a few of my favorite ways:

* Add fresh or frozen blueberries to organic, plain yogurt

* Add fresh or frozen blueberries to whole wheat pancakes or buckwheat pancakes if you are gluten intolerant.

* Frozen blueberries are a great treat when you are craving something cold and sweet.  This is particularly good on a warm day.

* Add fresh or frozen blueberries to a bowl of oatmeal or other whole-grain cereal.

What’s your favorite way to eat blueberries?
