The English Language in the Eyes of a Three Year Old

November 28th, 2007 · No Comments

Humor is an important part of a healthy life.  Studies show that humor reduces stress, eases muscle tension, lowers blood pressure, elevates mood, boosts the immune system, improves brain functioning, fosters relaxation and improves digestion and absorption.  As you can see a little humor does go along way toward health and well being.  So, may the following recount bring a smile to your face and a few healthy benefits as well.

The other day, my sister, Janice, and my three-year-old nephew, Zach, were out walking.  Janice saw an area in front of where they were walking that had quite a few rocks and some branches.  Janice said to Zach, “Careful, those branches might trip you up.”  Zach stopped and turned to look at his mother.  After thinking for a moment, he said, “No they won’t.  They’ll trip me down.”

Isn’t it rather comical that it takes a three-year-old to identify the absurdities and incongruousness of the English language and life in general?  I love seeing the world through young eyes and greatly appreciate the perspective it brings.

“Yes, dear Zach, you are right.  The twigs and branches will most definitely trip you down if you aren’t careful.”
