Last Sunday while I was in New York City for class with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I heard David Wolfe speak. David is a Raw Foodist or a Live Foodist, as some people prefer to be called. David Wolfe is a popular author and speaker, particularly amongst those interested in the Raw Food Diet and holistic eating and living. A couple of the books he has written are Eating For Beauty and Naked Chocolate.
David’s talk was fabulous. It was both entertaining and informative. I learned a lot of great information about superfoods, foods provided by Mother Nature that help ramp up one’s health and wellbeing. I will write about the superfoods David talked about in future blogs. For today, I wanted to share what David Wolfe called the secret to youthfulness. Intrigued? So, was I! Drum roll please…..the secret, according to David Wolfe, is sprouts, especially sprout juice. I’ve eaten a lot of sprouts, but had never thought of juicing them.
A couple of years ago I was on a sprout kick and regularly sprouted lentils, mung beans, wheat and a seed mixture with alfalfa and other seeds. Life changed though and I had gotten out of the habit of sprouting things. David’s talk motivated me to start sprouting again and this morning I created a mung bean sprout recipe that I ate for breakfast. I’m not a raw foodist like David Wolfe. I tried the raw food diet and found eating only raw food didn’t work for me, but knowing how important raw fruits and vegetables are I try to include as many raw foods in my diet as I can. In case you are looking for ways to incorporate more raw foods, especially sprouts, I thought I’d share my mung bean breakfast recipe. (Note: click here to learn how to sprout mung beans)
Mung Bean Sprout Breakfast
In a cereal bowl combine the following ingredients:
1 cup mung bean sprouts
2 Tbs Tahini
1/4 cup raisins
1 tsp Blackstrap Molasses
3/4 tsp cinnamon, or to taste
Stir all ingredients until sprouts are evenly covered. Add a dash of love and enjoy!
If you don’t like raisins, you could use Goji berries, fruit-sweetened cranberries, fresh or frozen blueberries, etc. Be creative and see what fun combinations you can come up with.
Of course, sprouts are not only a breakfast food. There are so many ways you can incorporate them into your day. I like using them at breakfast because they are a fast, easy alternative to cold cereal or other not so healthy ways to start the day. Be creative and see how you can add some “youthfulness” to your life with sprouts. Let me know what you come up with!
