Eczema and Gluten-Free Diet

November 21st, 2007 · 1 Comment

A few weeks ago patches of eczema showed up around my eyes and on my neck.  Knowing that outward signs like this are an indication that something is amiss internally within the body, I began my search to understand what may be at the root of the problem.  As eczema is fairly common, I thought I’d share a few things that have been helpful to me.

First, in my studies, I ran across research that indicated the gluten-free diet can be very helpful in eliminating eczema and other related skin disorders.  While I was eating really healthy–primarily fruits, vegetables and whole grains, I was eating gluten-containing grains.  As wheat is a common allergen, I decided to try an elimination diet and see if removing gluten from my diet made a difference.  I’ve been gluten-free for 3 weeks now and am seeing great improvements.  Not only has my skin improved, but I’ve also seen improvement in my overall digestion and energy level.  Will I have to stay gluten-free forever?  At this point I’m not sure.  I plan to continue on for at least 4 to 6 months to really give the body, primarily the gut time to heal and then I’ll go from there.

Another thing that has been very helpful is the Psorzema Body Wash and Lotion created by a company called derma e.  A friend recommended the products and I found them at my local health food store.  The combination of changing my diet to aid in the internal healing process and the topical healing from the body wash and lotion helped me see quick results.

I’m not prescribing either the gluten-free diet or the derma e products.  I am simply offering a solution that has worked really well for me as something you may want to consider if you are wondering how to care for eczema.  I was sure happy for those who pointed me towards solutions that worked and if I can do the same for someone else, all the better.  There are a number of factors that can contribute to eczema…stress, environmental considerations, diet.  Determining what the contributing factors for you may take some experimenting and further research.  If you know of or run across other good solutions for eczema, please share with the rest of us.
