The Best Health Expert For You

August 24th, 2007 · No Comments

Have you had this experience….?  You have a health related question so you do a little research either on the web or in books.  The first website you review tells you to do a, b and c.  Then, the next website you review tells you to do the complete opposite of what the first website said and says that the a, b and c approach is completely wrong.  Arggghh!!  You are back where you started and still don’t have an answer.  Frustrating and confusing isn’t it?

It’s true, nutrition and health is not a clean-cut, wraps-up-easily in a box sort of subject.   And, really, I guess this is to be expected.  We are each different, unique individuals with different needs and opinions.  Thus, what may work great for one person, necessarily isn’t the answer for someone else.  So, how do you know what is the ”right” answer for you?

As health coaches, we believe that those we work with are naturally creative, resourceful and whole, and that ultimately, the answers for themselves are within themselves.  The coach doesn’t have all the answers for a particular client.  Rather, the coach assists the client in coming to know that the client does have the answers, leads him or her to resources and needed information, teaches the client how to tap into his or her internal voice and how to trust what he or she hears.

Thinking back to the experience we talked about at the beginning of this blog where the information on the first website contradicted the information on the second website and how you are supposed to determine what is the right information, we can apply the coaching concept of you being a whole, creative and resourceful individual with your own answers.  Ultimately, what it boils down to is that the best health expert for you really is YOU.  Granted, this is not to say we don’t need doctors, naturepaths, nutritionists, chiropractors, etc.   Saying that we didn’t, would be like saying we don’t need air to breathe.  We need the fresh perspectives, talents and skills our health professionals provide.  They can do for us what we can’t do for ourselves.  But, it’s important to remember that you are the expert on yourself.  If something you read or are being told doesn’t sound right or feel right for you, then it may not be.  The flip side is also true.  You may feel drawn to a particular health practitioner or nutrition solution.  It may simply feel like it fits.  Learning to listen and trust the wisdom within takes time and practice.  Often it requires additional research and some trial and error, but it is there nonetheless.  The main thing to remember and appreciate is that when it comes to what eating plans to follow, practitioners to work with and advice to accept, it needs to ring true for you.

So, for today’s blog, I want to celebrate YOU.  You, the creative, resourceful, whole person.

Enjoy your day!
