Yesterday, I had one of my staff talk to me about the amount of time we’re spending with different patients, and we discussed how long a chiropractic adjustment should take.
A good chiropractor can do each adjustment in about 2 or 3 seconds. If you put them all together, there’s a bit of prepping in between each adjustment and re-placing a patient, and re-placing of a chiropractor’s hands. But the actually adjustment, itself, is simply a push in the correct direction, with the correct amount of force at the correct moment. That adjustment itself, should take no more than a second to 3 seconds.
What often takes a lot of time in a chiropractor’s office is not the patient’s bones getting moved but it’s getting the patient prepared for and understanding the adjustment, and getting the doctor prepared for and understanding the patient.
In our office, the first few visits the patient spends will take well over an hour on many of the visits. Sometimes, the visits can be a bit shorter, but for new patients, it’s rarely less than 20 minutes, and often takes over an hour the first 3 or 4 visits. The reason for this is that we’re going through and practically listening to the patient’s entire life story of their health. We want to know everything that’s happened to them that might have some effect on their chiropractic treatment. We’re also looking for things that might make chiropractic not the right answer for that patient. That does happen and we do refer people out for other things.
If a chiropractic office runs well, the individual patients have been so well-educated on chiropractic that they understand what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. When this takes place and the patient is feeling safe, we’re able to accomplish the adjustment in a more efficient manner. If a patient has some fears, or isn’t comfortable with the adjustment, then we need to take more time with that person on a separate visit to make sure that they’re completely in the right mental state in order to receive the adjustment.
Surfing this morning, I had an unbelievably perfect wave on a very small surfing day. The wave itself was 2 or 3 feet high, and went really, really fast and took me a very long way - I’m guessing a few hundred feet. The entire ride lasted no more than 3 or 4 seconds, but took a couple of hours to get ready, paddle out, and get organized and cleaned up afterwards. Same thing with a chiropractic adjustment. I’ve done a chiropractic adjustment that’s taken me 2-3 seconds or less that has changed somebody’s life forever and has allowed them to heal from some of the worst problems known to mankind. But it took hours of time to prepare that patient for those few seconds.

It happens every time. I sit down to study, read a book, eat dinner, or go through my mail when it hits me- that painful migraine. I fell on my neck when I was only eleven years old, and since that moment it has haunted me. Just staring down at the table for a reasonable amount of time can come back to bite me. Was it my body attacking my brain, or was my brain just going crazy? After thinking about my situation, I started to debate that age-old question: the body or the brain? I began to do some research and found some amazing information.

I already knew that the brain controls the body. It is made up of almost 10 billion nerves, which are cells that can carry messages to any part of the body. Nerve cells can talk to one another, sending messages throughout the body to create an interconnected system which allows the body to work properly. If the brain can’t get the message from one nerve to another, then the body part that needed to receive that message can’t do its job. This began to make sense, because I knew that when my spine was out of place, it was often because I was sitting wrong and putting too much pressure on my neck. I started to look for information that connected my neck to migraines.

When your spine is out of alignment, it is called a subluxation. This is just a fancy term that means three things: your spine is not straight, it is pinching a nerve, and it’s stuck like this! The nerves from your brain go down through your spinal cord, and come out between each vertebra, going to different areas of the body. The nerves that connect your brain to your head come out through the vertebra in your neck! Once they leave the spinal cord they branch out and go all over the head, to your eyes, mouth and face just to name a few. They control everything that is on top of your skull, and even go back into your neck! This made perfect sense, because many times when I started to feel a migraine coming on, my neck hurt and I was positioning it badly. So there it was, my neck was not in alignment, which created the pinching of a nerve. This nerve was how the brain talked to my head, and told it what to do. When the nerve was pinched, the brain couldn’t get the message through, and my head started to malfunction! That’s why it always felt like it was going crazy!

I always wondered if it was my body’s fault that I had migraines, if my accident had possibly pushed it past its working limit. But I understand now how everything is connected, how my brain is the key. It tells the rest of my body how to work, and if it can’t get its signal through because my spine is pinching a nerve then my body is in trouble! I also found out that the only doctor that can fix my subluxation is a chiropractor. Since I have been adjusted by a chiropractor, he has helped me correct my spine so that my brain can talk to the rest of my body again, especially my head! The pain of my migraines has decreased significantly, and now I can study with confidence because I know that if my neck gets stuck, I have someone to set it straight again!

Just for the record, I have treated many patients who had Diabetes who had no improvement in their blood sugar.
I am not saying anything. I am just publishing her letter, with her permission of course
Everything below this on this page is written by Laura.

Dr. Klein,

I want to take a minute to thank you and your team for the support and wonderful work you do. When I came to your office for my initial evaluation, I was already diagnosed with pre-diabetes. I was checking my blood glucose level once in the morning (fasting) and once in the evening (1-2hrs after dinner). The morning range I need to be in is 60-120 and I was on average measuring 119 to 125. The evening range I need to be in is 160 or less and I was on average measuring 150 to 160.

I have been in your office on a regular schedule for adjustments and for the last 1.5 weeks have had my morning blood glucose measure 90 to 96 and my evening range has been 140 to 120. This is a huge accomplishment for me and I am excited for the continued success with controlling my blood glucose.

I could not be doing this with out your help!

Thanks!
Laura C.

When I was eleven years old I fell from my fifteen foot tree house and landed on my neck. I was a little scared and had the wind knocked out of me, but besides that I felt fine. Four months later I began to feel the symptoms of a migraine: dizziness, blurred vision, and a pounding sensation in my head. I went to many doctors and variety of specialists, but no one could figure out how to help me. They prescribed me many medications, but they never completely healed me. It was not until weeks later that I was referred to a chiropractor. After the very first visit I started to feel better. But it wasn’t until many years later that I was old enough to understand what made chiropractic care different.

The human brain controls everything your body does. It is connected to the rest of your body by nerves. These nerves go through your spine. When your spine is out of alignment, it pinches on the nerves. This makes it hard for the brain to tell your body what to do. If the brain cannot talk to your body, your body doesn’t know what to do. Once your body stops working correctly, you will start to feel symptoms. A chiropractor can put your spine back into proper alignment, so that the nerve is no longer being pinched, which will let your brain talk to your body again!

When you have a migraine, you can only feel pain, which is known as a symptom. This symptom can be created by a nerve being pinched between your skull and your top vertebrae. Once this happens you can begin to feel a migraine. This pinching can be fixed to allow your brain to send the correct information to the body, and even back to itself! This is why you might also have the symptom of nausea or vomiting. If your brain cannot send the right message to your body, many parts of the body may not work as well. This is why chiropractic care is so important, because it can align the top vertebrae again to release that pinched nerve. After the nerve is released, you may very well begin to feel much better!

Without constant chiropractic care I would never have been able to live a full life. With each adjustment, my symptoms faded away and I began to feel healthier. I know that it is much safer to have my spine in proper alignment than to rely on medication to cover-up my pain. Since coming to a chiropractor I have decreased headaches, pain, and migraines. It has helped me in every aspect of my life, and it has created a new world that is medication-free! Everything has changed since my first visit, I can only hope that one day each person will be able to experience it for themselves!

As anyone who knows me knows, I am a huge Wordpress and Wordcamp fan. Huge. I just got the most amazing hotel deal for Wordcamp 2008. Even though the offical blog has not announced it yet, the the wordpress.org site shows the event will be on August 16th

So here is how I found the ridiculous hotel deal.

I went to hotwire.com and searched for hotels in San Francisco. It lists 4.5 stars west of Union Square. The only hotel of that level I could find in the map area is Campton Place Hotel. This place is listed as a 4.5 or 5 star hotel.

I called the hotel directly and asked them about it. Without even blinking, they asked I that I call back during business hours and speak to the in-house reservations. They matched the reservation price of hotwire, while letting me reserve there directly.

I promised the hotel I would not tell the price online, but if you e-mail me I will tell you what I paid.

You basically end up paying around twice what the Motel 6 by Los Angeles Airport charges for one of the hotels listed by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the best places to stay in the world.

What is better than going to a real “street” un-conference like wordcamp, while staying in a 5 star hotel. Leave me a comment or shoot me an e-mail if you are staying there, we can have breakfast!
