This coming February I will have been practicing chiropractic in San Diego for 20 years.

It seems like an eye blink of dragging in the portable table the first night before the paint was dry to treat a girl who had fallen off of a balcony and landed head first on her head. A million adjustments (not an exaggeration) of everything from movie stars, to cleaning ladies, sandy surfers, and women about to give birth, old people so frail their bones could barely hold them up, down to newborn babies the day after they were born.

Getting to be the second chiropractor in the world to teach M.D.’s in a medical school (U.C. San Diego), training over 1000 chiropractors, slowly paying off a gigantic chiropractic student loan, watching staff members arrive, grow up, and sometimes move on. We have seen patients get married, have babies, and very, very rarely leave this earth.

There are a 100 professions where I could have made more money, and worked a lot less, but none that I could be so proud of all the people we have helped, and all of the love they have given us.

A great friend of mine, a chiropractor named David Singer, once said to me, “When I lie on my death bed, I want to know, that I helped more people, in more ways, than anyone thought was possible. That is how I feel. And I’m just getting started being a San Diego Chiropractor, even after 20 years.

If you read this, I would love to meet you and show you what we do, the ways we can help so many things. Please mention you read this page, and the staff will schedule you some time to sit down with me, and see if we can help you. Let’s just call it a “Get to know the doctor visit”, and it is on me, free, no charge. Call us at 858-459-3132 if you would like to schedule one. Or email me at lajollachiropractor (at) gmail.com

We were recently awarded “Best of Yelp” which I am very proud of.

Yesterday, I had one of my staff talk to me about the amount of time we’re spending with different patients, and we discussed how long a chiropractic adjustment should take.
A good chiropractor can do each adjustment in about 2 or 3 seconds. If you put them all together, there’s a bit of prepping in between each adjustment and re-placing a patient, and re-placing of a chiropractor’s hands. But the actually adjustment, itself, is simply a push in the correct direction, with the correct amount of force at the correct moment. That adjustment itself, should take no more than a second to 3 seconds.
What often takes a lot of time in a chiropractor’s office is not the patient’s bones getting moved but it’s getting the patient prepared for and understanding the adjustment, and getting the doctor prepared for and understanding the patient.
In our office, the first few visits the patient spends will take well over an hour on many of the visits. Sometimes, the visits can be a bit shorter, but for new patients, it’s rarely less than 20 minutes, and often takes over an hour the first 3 or 4 visits. The reason for this is that we’re going through and practically listening to the patient’s entire life story of their health. We want to know everything that’s happened to them that might have some effect on their chiropractic treatment. We’re also looking for things that might make chiropractic not the right answer for that patient. That does happen and we do refer people out for other things.
If a chiropractic office runs well, the individual patients have been so well-educated on chiropractic that they understand what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. When this takes place and the patient is feeling safe, we’re able to accomplish the adjustment in a more efficient manner. If a patient has some fears, or isn’t comfortable with the adjustment, then we need to take more time with that person on a separate visit to make sure that they’re completely in the right mental state in order to receive the adjustment.
Surfing this morning, I had an unbelievably perfect wave on a very small surfing day. The wave itself was 2 or 3 feet high, and went really, really fast and took me a very long way – I’m guessing a few hundred feet. The entire ride lasted no more than 3 or 4 seconds, but took a couple of hours to get ready, paddle out, and get organized and cleaned up afterwards. Same thing with a chiropractic adjustment. I’ve done a chiropractic adjustment that’s taken me 2-3 seconds or less that has changed somebody’s life forever and has allowed them to heal from some of the worst problems known to mankind. But it took hours of time to prepare that patient for those few seconds.

As anyone who knows me knows, I am a huge WordPress and Wordcamp fan. Huge. I just got the most amazing hotel deal for Wordcamp 2008. Even though the offical blog has not announced it yet, the the wordpress.org site shows the event will be on August 16th

So here is how I found the ridiculous hotel deal.

I went to hotwire.com and searched for hotels in San Francisco. It lists 4.5 stars west of Union Square. The only hotel of that level I could find in the map area is Campton Place Hotel. This place is listed as a 4.5 or 5 star hotel.

I called the hotel directly and asked them about it. Without even blinking, they asked I that I call back during business hours and speak to the in-house reservations. They matched the reservation price of hotwire, while letting me reserve there directly.

I promised the hotel I would not tell the price online, but if you e-mail me I will tell you what I paid.

You basically end up paying around twice what the Motel 6 by Los Angeles Airport charges for one of the hotels listed by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the best places to stay in the world.

What is better than going to a real “street” un-conference like wordcamp, while staying in a 5 star hotel. Leave me a comment or shoot me an e-mail if you are staying there, we can have breakfast!

When I search the term “chiropractic blog” in Google, I only show around 5,000 matches. When you realize that most of them are probably talking about a chiropractic blog, and are not actually a chiropractic blog, you quickly realize what a rare animal it is.

One of our newer patients Betsy who was referred to us from UCSD medical school, has been gushing so much about chiropractic and asking how she could help spread the word that I gave her a chiropractic blog on our site.

Here is the beginning of her health care adventure.

What makes the whole thing even more thrilling is Betsy’s era. I will simply give you one of Betsy’s own quotes from her blog, “I was really surprised when she said there are only a few “geezers” like myself.”

To be honest, I am 43 and most people my age don’t have myspace or facebook pages, and barely even understand what a blog is. In the Geezer catagory, you won’t find too many bloggers, and especially not about chiropractic.

I am finding it very interesting to read the same story I live in from her perspective. This whole blog thing is very new to her, so if you stop by, please leave a comment. I am sure she will be thrilled.
