It happens every time. I sit down to study, read a book, eat dinner, or go through my mail when it hits me- that painful migraine. I fell on my neck when I was only eleven years old, and since that moment it has haunted me. Just staring down at the table for a reasonable amount of time can come back to bite me. Was it my body attacking my brain, or was my brain just going crazy? After thinking about my situation, I started to debate that age-old question: the body or the brain? I began to do some research and found some amazing information.

I already knew that the brain controls the body. It is made up of almost 10 billion nerves, which are cells that can carry messages to any part of the body. Nerve cells can talk to one another, sending messages throughout the body to create an interconnected system which allows the body to work properly. If the brain can’t get the message from one nerve to another, then the body part that needed to receive that message can’t do its job. This began to make sense, because I knew that when my spine was out of place, it was often because I was sitting wrong and putting too much pressure on my neck. I started to look for information that connected my neck to migraines.

When your spine is out of alignment, it is called a subluxation. This is just a fancy term that means three things: your spine is not straight, it is pinching a nerve, and it’s stuck like this! The nerves from your brain go down through your spinal cord, and come out between each vertebra, going to different areas of the body. The nerves that connect your brain to your head come out through the vertebra in your neck! Once they leave the spinal cord they branch out and go all over the head, to your eyes, mouth and face just to name a few. They control everything that is on top of your skull, and even go back into your neck! This made perfect sense, because many times when I started to feel a migraine coming on, my neck hurt and I was positioning it badly. So there it was, my neck was not in alignment, which created the pinching of a nerve. This nerve was how the brain talked to my head, and told it what to do. When the nerve was pinched, the brain couldn’t get the message through, and my head started to malfunction! That’s why it always felt like it was going crazy!

I always wondered if it was my body’s fault that I had migraines, if my accident had possibly pushed it past its working limit. But I understand now how everything is connected, how my brain is the key. It tells the rest of my body how to work, and if it can’t get its signal through because my spine is pinching a nerve then my body is in trouble! I also found out that the only doctor that can fix my subluxation is a chiropractor. Since I have been adjusted by a chiropractor, he has helped me correct my spine so that my brain can talk to the rest of my body again, especially my head! The pain of my migraines has decreased significantly, and now I can study with confidence because I know that if my neck gets stuck, I have someone to set it straight again!

I would never dream of writing anything about what is below, as I don’t think anyone would believe me. The below is a letter written by Laura a patient of ours about her diabetes after receiving chiropractic.
Just for the record, I have treated many patients who had Diabetes who had no improvement in their blood sugar.
I am not saying anything. I am just publishing her letter, with her permission of course
Everything below this on this page is written by Laura.

Dr. Klein,

I want to take a minute to thank you and your team for the support and wonderful work you do. When I came to your office for my initial evaluation, I was already diagnosed with pre-diabetes. I was checking my blood glucose level once in the morning (fasting) and once in the evening (1-2hrs after dinner). The morning range I need to be in is 60-120 and I was on average measuring 119 to 125. The evening range I need to be in is 160 or less and I was on average measuring 150 to 160.

I have been in your office on a regular schedule for adjustments and for the last 1.5 weeks have had my morning blood glucose measure 90 to 96 and my evening range has been 140 to 120. This is a huge accomplishment for me and I am excited for the continued success with controlling my blood glucose.

I could not be doing this with out your help!

Thanks!
Laura C.

When I was eleven years old I fell from my fifteen foot tree house and landed on my neck. I was a little scared and had the wind knocked out of me, but besides that I felt fine. Four months later I began to feel the symptoms of a migraine: dizziness, blurred vision, and a pounding sensation in my head. I went to many doctors and variety of specialists, but no one could figure out how to help me. They prescribed me many medications, but they never completely healed me. It was not until weeks later that I was referred to a chiropractor. After the very first visit I started to feel better. But it wasn’t until many years later that I was old enough to understand what made chiropractic care different.

The human brain controls everything your body does. It is connected to the rest of your body by nerves. These nerves go through your spine. When your spine is out of alignment, it pinches on the nerves. This makes it hard for the brain to tell your body what to do. If the brain cannot talk to your body, your body doesn’t know what to do. Once your body stops working correctly, you will start to feel symptoms. A chiropractor can put your spine back into proper alignment, so that the nerve is no longer being pinched, which will let your brain talk to your body again!

When you have a migraine, you can only feel pain, which is known as a symptom. This symptom can be created by a nerve being pinched between your skull and your top vertebrae. Once this happens you can begin to feel a migraine. This pinching can be fixed to allow your brain to send the correct information to the body, and even back to itself! This is why you might also have the symptom of nausea or vomiting. If your brain cannot send the right message to your body, many parts of the body may not work as well. This is why chiropractic care is so important, because it can align the top vertebrae again to release that pinched nerve. After the nerve is released, you may very well begin to feel much better!

Without constant chiropractic care I would never have been able to live a full life. With each adjustment, my symptoms faded away and I began to feel healthier. I know that it is much safer to have my spine in proper alignment than to rely on medication to cover-up my pain. Since coming to a chiropractor I have decreased headaches, pain, and migraines. It has helped me in every aspect of my life, and it has created a new world that is medication-free! Everything has changed since my first visit, I can only hope that one day each person will be able to experience it for themselves!

My standard disclaimer, the below is simply my opinion, and my record of someone else’s opinion. Before acting on it, ask your doctor!

Every decade or so, there appears in the media attacks against chiropractic. Bottom line, chiropractic is very, very, very safe. After 15 years in practice, and after doing by my estimates, over 700,000 adjustments, I have never had anyone get worse from a chiropractic adjustment except that they got sore for a few days, like they exercised too hard, which is actually very, very common. The worst we ever had was an older woman who was sore for a week.
I have known a chiropractor who adjusted an older man really hard on his upper back, who ended up with a small fracture of the rib. The older man was still thrilled, because in the process his back pain which he had had forever went away, and he knew over the next weeks, the fracture would heal. People also fall off chiropractic tables and break bones each year in the U.S. The above things are true and real.

Since the 1950’s various anti-chiropractic groups have been trying to prove chiropractic is dangerous. Now ask yourself, how many people do you know who have been killed by a chiropractor? Now I don’t mean the friend of a friend of a friend who claims to have known someone who was killed by a chiropractor, I mean who do you know who was killed by a chiropractor?

There was recently an article in one of these supposed health magazines called “True Health Prevention Magazine” or something like that. It used very general language, and some pretty strong adjectives to try to link a woman’s bizarre supposed story to her having been injured by a chiropractor.

If you look at this, or any of the other major magazines that try to show chiropractic causes strokes, at who are the ADVERTI$ER$ it does not take long to see who pays for those magazines. This is why you can get subscriptions for a little more than the price of postage. The real money comes from the advertisers. Just ask yourself which of the advertisers would rather that you never went to a chiropractor? HMMMmmm…….
Over the past couple of years there have been stories popping up in magazines trying to make connections between chiropractic and strokes. Who is probably behind it is pretty obvious if you look at who would benefit, but there is no proof that I know of.

Gerald Clum D.C. , past president of Life West Chiropractic College, gave a talk today at the California Chiropractic Association annual conference. He pointed out a few important things.

First off, the type of stroke that is claimed can be caused by chiropractic takes place as follows. There are three layers of one of the arteries in the neck. These layers are tubes within tubes. The center tube tears in certain situations. If it tears, blood can flow behind it. This can cause turbulence, and the formation of a blood clot. If the clot breaks free, it can block off some part of the blood flow of the brain. This is what is called a stroke.

Dr. Clum states states that if you look at the literature it appears that the people that this happens to have some type of predisposing weakness of the center lining of the artery. The scientific literature shows that people with weakness in this area can have strokes caused by the weakness tearing. The literature shows that people have had these types of strokes after, judo, yoga, ceiling painting, nose blowing, hypertension, oral contraceptive use, sexual activity, receiving anesthesia, use of resuscitation activities, receiving a shampoo, vomiting, and sneezing.

Dr. Clum states in his notes,

“Current thinking holds that the majority of patients who develop frank symptoms of a vertebral artery dissection (thing that happens just before stroke) following chiropractic care were in the process of dissection when they presented for care.”

In my opinion this means that people who have strokes after visiting a chiropractic office probably would have had them anyway the next time they sneezed, had sex or stepped off a curb.
Dr. Clum stated that Life Chiropractic College clinic does and has done millions and millions of adjustments. In the multi decade history of this very, very busy chiropractic clinic, they have never had a patient have a stroke.

I have done hundreds of thousands of adjustments over my career, and I have never had a patient have a stroke.

Of the over a thousand chiropractors I have either trained or spoken to, I have never known a chiropractor to have a patient with a stroke.

Dr. Clum stated that a new research article will be coming out soon that he was privy to at the world chiropractic association meeting, will show that the incidence of of having a stroke after visiting a chiropractor and after visiting a medical doctor were identical which would imply that neither one of them cause strokes.
I am sitting next to Dr. Dean Wines who has been a chiropractor for 53 years, his dad was a chiropractor and 8 people in his immediate family are chiropractors. Any of these chiropractors ever seen a patient who had a stroke caused by chiropractic, I just asked him? “Nope”

I spend a lot of time writing and speaking about the benefits of chiropractic care to a point where people start to think I believe it will fix anything.

First off, chiropractic never fixed anything except a stuck bone. In my opinion, a chiropractic adjustment can do one thing and only one thing, unstick a stuck bone, get it moving, release the adhesions holding it in place, mobilize it, all meaning the same thing.

I consider myself to be a body mechanic of a specialized part of the body. If you take your car in to a good mechanic, and they hear a squeek under the hood, they won’t just go in and spray lubricant on the squeek, which 9 times out of 10 will get rid of a squeek temporarily. They will look for what is causing the squeak. So maybe they see the belt is slipping, but why is the belt slipping? Perhaps they see the pulley the belt is attatched to is wobling. Now they won’t just replace the pulley, but will dig deeper. Then they find the bearings are worn, they are 20 year old bearings, and are just plain worn, with no other cause than lots of use, so they will replace the bearings.

In taking care of bodies it is the same thing. You see a guy with abdominal pain. But why? Is it because he has an ulcer?, appendicitis?, gas? or too much acid? A crappy doctor will stop with that and just give them the treatment for the obvious condition (which might be necessary if the problem is dangerous), but a really good doctor will not stop there, he will dig deeper, and find out what is causing the problem in the first place. Is it the patients diet? Lack of exercise? Poor nerve signals to that area? Stress? Some toxic thing he is putting into his body?

A good doctor will dig and find the root cause. So who won’t benefit from chiropractic care? The person whose root cause is not a stuck bone. Before someone can make a final answer on this, I think they need to understand the info in these chiropractic books. Some people might argue with some of the finer details of these books, but the root core in my opinion is true. Read them for yourself and decide if chiropractic might help your problem.

As always, the above is my opinion, ask a good doctor before taking action, and leave a comment below so I can hear what you think, even if you disagree!

As always this is not medical advice. Ask your doctor before you do anything. But please, please read the letter discussed in my blog!
I wonderful beautiful girl came into our office a week ago. She is an attorney. She was referred in from another friend of hers who is an attorney. If you read the letter about what was happening to her it will blow your mind.

There has been a lot of talk on the Internet lately about chiropractic and blood pressure.

You might even find some crazy articles on the Internet about chiropractic being dangerous.

This girl has had thousands of dollars of tests to figure out what was wrong with her, over the past months, and I guarantee that many M.D.’s who read this letter about her whooshing blood vessels would have thought that chiropractic would be very dangerous for her.

After all of the prep work we did, I predicted it would be very safe for her. If you read the letter you can judge for yourself.

I hope that others with high blood pressure, or whooshing arteries will find this article and read her letter. I hope you forward the letter linked to from this page to as many people as possible.

I look forward to watching what happens next!

There is quite a bit of buzz on the internet right now about a study done at the University of Chicago showing that at least in their study chiropractic lowered blood pressure.

A few years ago we did an informal study at our office, where we took a few random people whose blood pressure was on the highish side, who were already patients, treated them using very simple chiropractic, and then re-checked their blood pressure immediately after the treatment. It was by no means a true scientific study, and of course they knew that chiropractic was not being done as a treatment for their blood pressure, but it was just to see what happened?
In the small sample of I believe three people, we found that almost one to one, their blood pressure dropped about 20 points on both the high and low number.

Of course (my attorney will kill me if I don’t write these things) you should see a medical doctor if you have high blood pressure, and it can be dangerous if left untreated. But if you are already going to the chiropractor, and he takes your blood pressure immediately before and immediately after he does his usual work on you, let me know what you find!

I know for myself, that I can radically lower my own blood pressure using just my mind controlling my body. It was a little trick I learned during the years I meditated (starting strangely enough around age 7 Just for the fun of it, I just lowered mine from 150 over 100 to 120 over 80 in about 4 minnutes. So if a beings mind can do it that easily, is it that hard to believe that freeing up of pressure on nerves could serve the same effect?

In the study the bone aligned was the top vertebrae, the atlas. We have long known that the atlas literally wraps around the brain stem or the top of the spinal cord. Pressure or tugging on this area in my opinion can cause any one of a multitude of problems. Chiropractors in the know have always focused on the top vertebrae. I have made the study of adjusting that bone a top priority in my career.

If you read this book, it might make chiropractic and blood pressure make more sense.

I am going to start this one out with a strong legal disclaimer. What I am writing about here is purely a theory. It is not fact. Do not act on it without speaking to our doctor first. In fact I will go so far as saying to talk to your OBGYN before even reading the below. I am putting it out as a theory for other chiropractors and OBGYN’s to discuss. This is not advise, it is not fact, it is a theory on chiropractic, pregnancy and birth that I want to float out on the net, and see what people think.

The following is from a letter I wrote to a new chiropractor who is also trained to assist in natural pregnancy and births.

In our chiropractic office in San Diego we had a very experienced and highly trained midwife as a patient for many, many years, and I had many lengthy discussions with her on the possibly biology of where chiropractic and birth intersect.

My letter to the new chiropractor:

I have lots of pregnant patients, and try to get all of them to have their babies delivered by a midwife if possible.

What has your experience been with labor, and the sacrum releasing from the ilium bones?

I have found that if I adjust the patients pelvis many times during pregnancy, and then very often just before the birth, that the women have tended to have very, very short labors. Often they report that they were painless, and barely uncomfortable. Obviously we are not treating the pregnancy or trying to be midwives, but instead treating the stuck ilium bones that are also there in these pregnant women.

I am a man, and have never had a child myself, and am trying to understand. The best theory I have, is simply that the bowl of the pelvis gets locked in if the sacrum is stuck to the iliums. Then when we release them, the bones open up, the sacrum swings out of the way, and the baby can come out easily.

How does that line up with what you have observed?

Also, if I am right, then during the delivery when a woman has not been to a chiropractor, there would probably be a pop sound often when the baby releases the sacrum free of the iliums. I personally have never observed an actual birth so I lack actual observable data to test this, other than the joyous reviews our patients have given us after the birth.

Again.. just to repeat it, the above is not fact, but just theory. This is not medical advice and should not be acted on as medical advice. It is being published to generate discussion amongst the medical community regarding chiropractic during pregnancy, and the effect of chiropractic on birth.

We all love beautiful things. In fact most of us prefer to be one of those beautiful things! For most of us, (author included) we were born with very average looks. Maintaining maximum beauty (or for the dudes maximum good lookingness) then goes toward maintaining a healthfull and youthfull apearance. It is amazing how many of my patients in their 60’s and 70’s maintain the looks of people decades younger. It comes out for one in the way they stand. If your spine is mobile, you can stand up straighter. It also comes out in the way they move. If you have a mobile spine, you move fluidly, and gracefully, and can recover easily if you trip on something, or miss a step.

Finally, the most beutiful thing of all to me is a happy face. When we look at someone, we can see how they feel. If someone is pain free and full of life, we can see it. If someone is full of pain, they grimace, and even if they try to smile, we can still see the truth.

I have found through careful study of myself in the mirror, that if I have a headache or don’t have a headache literally makes a difference of about 20 years on how I look. Others I have asked have been happy to agree

So stay straight, stay strong, and stay mobile, and your beauty will fade much slower, or at least it will take longer for ugliness to set in!

Many people go to the doctor and are diagnosed with herniated or bulging discs. A herniated or bulging disc simply means the gooey center is bulging out, or sticking out a little.

Before you read the below about herniated discs make sure you understand the info in the chiropractic book.

A recent discussion with one of my patients led to the following e-mail, which I thought I would post.
The below is my theory. It is not an absolute truth, but is the best explanation of the data I have studied and observed in the thousands of patients I have treated.

Make sure to talk to your chiropractor or medical doctor before doing anything based on the info below. Again it is simply my theory.

MRI’s routinely show Herniated discs that have no symptoms attached to them.

It is almost impossible to tell if a herniated disc is causing the symptoms or not.

A free floating fragment is simply a piece of disc that broke off and is floating around. It may or may not cause symptoms. There is nothing I can do about those.

My theory on herniated discs is as follows.

The subluxation has as its basis adhesions between the facet surfaces of the two vertebrae involved. (facets are the little joints in the back of the vertebrae)

The disc between the two vertebrae has a poor blood supply.

The disc receives its nourishment through motion of the two vertebrae above and below it squishing the blood and fluids through the disc.

If there is a subluxation, this squishing can not take place.

Therefore the disc dries out, and can get cracks in it.

The center of the disc is jelly.

The jelly can start to work its way out the cracks.

That is a herniation or bulge of a disc.

The first step to fix it is to get the facet joints unstuck from each other.

This allows the fluid to get squished in from the vertebrae.

The disc then stands a chance of healing.

Then you traction the two vertebrae apart.

Those moving tables we use, do just that.

The traction creates a negative pressure in the center of the disc.

The herniation can get sucked back in.

If at the moment the herniated disc is sucked back in, I move the bones, it can re-arange the outer fibers of the disc, locking the jelly inside.

With people that have been sent to me for treatment of herniated disc, some of them have comepletely resolved their symptoms and some of them have only mild improvements. No one has ever gotten worse that I know of. Quite a few have canceled scheduled surgeries. I have some amazing stories on that one.
