Atoms

The world around us is full of variety. Take a look around. What do you see? Tables, chairs, computers, trees, cars, animals, mountains, rivers, sun, moon, humans… The list is endless.

How would you react if someone was to tell you that each and every thing that you see - Tables, chairs, computers, trees, cars, animals, mountains, rivers, sun, moon, humans… - is made up of the same thing. Would you believe it? Probably not.

However, that is true. Everything in this universe, and that means everything, is made up of the same thing – atoms.

What are atoms, you may ask. Well, atoms are extremely small objects that combine together in various ways to create the world around us. To get an idea about the size of an atom, consider this. The number of atoms in a spoon of water taken from an ocean is more than the total number of spoons of water in the entire ocean!

Now that you know that everything in the universe is made up of atoms, you may ask what atoms are made of? Well, atoms are made up of even smaller particles called protons, electrons. At the center of each atom is the nucleus containing the protons and neutrons. Surrounding it are the electrons.
